Ducey touted the new law as a victory for election integrity and cast it as part of Arizona s efforts to continuously refine its voter system. Arizona has for years continuously improved and refined our election laws including intuitively renaming absentee voting to early voting and constantly seeking to strengthen the security and integrity of our elections, Ducey said in a tweet sharing a video of the bill s signing. S.B 1485 ensures Arizona remains a leader for inclusive, accessible, efficient and secure election administration, he added.

The Republican governor acted hours after state Senate Republicans approved the measure today over protests from Democrats and prominent business leaders who say it will suppress the votes of people of color. The legislation is part of a wave of proposals to reduce voting access that have passed in Republican-controlled states around the country following former President Donald Trump’s defeat last year. Repeated reviews have found no problems with the election results in Arizona or elsewhere. SB1485 renames Arizona’s Permanent Early Voting List to the Active Early Voting List. Voters on the early voting list who do not vote in two consecutive election cycles will be removed.

(CN) Arizona Governor Doug Ducey signed a bill Tuesday making it easier for election officials to purge voters who skip elections from a list of those who automatically receive mail-in ballots.
Arizona’s 4.3 million voters can choose to automatically get mail-in ballots, which they can use for any reason, for each election. The new law changes the name of the Permanent Early Voting List to Active Early Voting List and requires voters to opt in to the list if they miss two consecutive elections, including local ones.
Voters will be removed from the list if they do not opt in after a postcard from the state. Ducey released a statement calling the measure good policy that will strengthen Arizona’s election system.

PHOENIX Governor Doug Ducey today signed legislation that builds on the state’s leadership in election integrity, protects Arizona voters and streamlines the way elections are conducted.
“Arizona is a national leader when it comes to election integrity and access to the ballot box, and Senate Bill 1485 continues that legacy. In 1992, our state began offering the ability for Arizonans to vote an absentee ballot. Since then, Arizona has continuously improved and refined our election laws including intuitively renaming ‘absentee’ voting to ‘early’ voting and constantly seeking to strengthen the security and integrity of our elections,” the Governor said in a letter explaining his support for the bill.
