This article was first published at reviewsfire.com. Samsung’s QN900A Neo QLED 8K TV is imposing and stunning. It boasts a fantastic design, a sharp and clear display, rich colours, inky blacks, and it even uses AI technology to upscale content into 8K. It’s a magnificent engineering achievement. But asking whether this is a good TV or not is a waste of time. It clearly is. A better question is: whether there is any point in buying an 8K TV right now? As is always the case with new technology, some initial pioneers (usually Samsung) adopt specific tech before it becomes mainstream. It was the same for the first 4K TVs, and it’s the same with 8K TVs now.
Samsung s brand-new Neo QLED range is a giant leap forward in TV technology.
Think you ve seen a great TV set? Think again. Everything that came before Samsung s brand-new Neo QLED range is, well, a little dull in comparison. Amazingly, the innovation at the heart of the giant leap forward is paradoxically really, really small. By shrinking the light emitting diodes (Quantum Mini LEDs) which produce the image on a Neo QLED by 40 times, Samsung has achieved never before possible image quality. It s not an iterative improvement, but a jump into a whole new generation. Be that as it may, the first thing that strikes you when unboxing a new Samsung Neo QLED is the stunning design. The screen is incredibly skinny. That s thanks to an embrace of minimalism so what s on TV is always the centrepiece, rather than what the TV itself looks like (spoiler: even so, the TV looks amazing when off).
