WITH different children s parks now being shut down by authorities, the latest play area to be closed is a skatepark in Newbury. Newbury Town Council made the announcement yesterday, January 18, detailing how the skatepark, in Victoria Park, Newbury, has been closed due to police pressure surrounding lockdown laws. According to the council, the Thames Valley Police (TVP) made requests to the council to close the site due to non-compliance with the latest social distancing rules.  Cllr Martin Colston, Leader of the Council, said that the site has been extremely busy over the past few weeks, so much so that ensuring social distancing is being kept has proven impossible.

Newbury Town Council objects to converting Faraday Road into open recreational space “Sport is clearly a much better use of the ground rather than general recreation Jonathan Ashby   ); NEWBURY Town Council has objected to plans to convert the disused Faraday Road football ground into a public recreational space. Conservative-run West Berkshire Council (WBC) wants to convert the ground – which has stood empty since Newbury Football Club was evicted in July 2018 – into an open space, while also demolishing the now dilapidated clubhouse at a cost of £191,000. More pay-and-display parking spaces would be installed, and the open space will remain until the district council gets the go-ahead to redevelop the London Road Industrial Estate.

Community come together to plant 200 new trees in Newbury MP and mayor join local businesses and residents to create Lockdown Wood in memory of Covid-19 victims );   ); NEWBURY MP Laura Farris and mayor Elizabeth O’Keeffe joined residents and members of the businesses community to plant more than 200 saplings in Newbury’s Goldwell Park. The event was the second part of the Lockdown Woods project, a joint initiative between Newbury Friends of the Earth, Newbury Town Council and West Berkshire Council which will see 1,800 trees planted across the district. The saplings, as well as improving the environment and making West Berkshire a greener place to be, will also serve as living memorials to those who have lost their lives as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
