As the Wellesley Chamber of Commerce prepares to join forces with the Newton-Needham Regional Chamber next month, The Wellesley Townsman asked its president, Greg Reibman, about the future of that organization and its present and future members.
WT: Twenty years ago, smaller chambers of commerce were very different entities. They tended to focus on local projects, tax issues and ribbon-cuttings. Today, the business climate is far more challenging, especially since the arrival of the pandemic. Have local chambers been able to keep up with the needs of their business members, or are many just dying off?
GR: In my nine years at our chamber we’ve worked hard to keep up with the times, the trends and the technology.

With Newton joining other cities and towns in rolling back the Reopening Massachusetts plan to a modified Phase Two, Step Two starting Dec. 18, in an email Mayor Ruthanne Fuller said she hopes these efforts will help reduce the impact of the regional surge of COVID-19.
The city is also looking ahead to if and when its Health and Human Services Department will be involved in administering the vaccine, but Fuller said the state hasn’t made any decisions yet.
“We do expect at some point to be part of the process,” she said during a phone interview Thursday.

COVID vaccinations began at Newton-Wellesley Hospital Thursday, but at this time they are not mandatory, according to spokeswoman Heidi Wilson, director of communications and public affairs.
Wilson detailed how the hospital is administering the vaccines and how staff members are reacting.
How many staff members at the hospital will be getting the vaccine during phase one of the state’s distribution plan and how will they be prioritized? What are their job titles? If you don’t have an exact number, can you give me an approximate number?
Receiving the vaccine is voluntary. It will be offered to healthcare workers in designated waves (four), based on state and federal guidelines.
