A man is in the Newton County Jail facing two charges of aggravated assault with a deadly
weapon and resisting arrest. 52-year old Jessie Wyatt is accused of pointing a loaded crossbow
at his sister and brother. When deputies arrived at the home Tuesday on County Road 4183 in
Deweyville, Wyatt was inside the home armed with the crossbow and a machete. He refused to
come out the house and deputies forced entry and took him into custody.
COVINGTON, Ga. Five detention officers have tested positive for COVID-19 as of Jan. 15, Newton County Sheriff Ezell Brown said, which is what likely sparked a recent outbreak of virus among more than 20 inmates.

A Covington woman was charged with drunken driving and vehicular homicide after a crash that resulted in a motorcyclist’s death Sunday night.
It happened at about 9:20 p.m. Sunday on Access Road, just west of Capes Drive.
Troopers said a 2010 Audi failed to stop before striking the rear of a 2020 Jiangsu Baodiao 9 Lines motorcycle as both were eastbound on Access Road.
The motorcycle driver, 55-year-old Andrew Tyrone Fuller of Covington, was taken to Piedmont Newton Hospital and later died.

COVINGTON, Ga. A Newton County resident facing charges of uploading child pornography had been a student government leader at Georgia State University s Newton campus and a candidate for Student Government Association president for its Atlanta campus before his early December arrest.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation charged Carlos Porter, 21, with Sexual Exploitation of Children (Possession of Child Sexual Abuse Material) in violation of state law Dec. 8, a news release stated.
He was the Student Government Association executive vice president of GSU s Newton campus and was a candidate for SGA president for the Atlanta campus, according to a report in the university s student newspaper The Signal.
