AN airline which has temporarily restored one international flight from Newcastle has ruled out the return of permanent flights abroad from the region. EasyJet has said it has no plans to increase any of its existing routes, both domestically or internationally, from the North-East airport. It comes as the airline last year axed all international flights from Newcastle and closed its long-term base there, leaving flights to just two destinations, Belfast and Bristol. But to the surprise of some last month, the airline said it would be operating flights to Faro in Portugal as a one-off season, following a surge in demand.

Newcastle Airport has revealed the new safety measures in store for North East holidaymakers - and confirmed when flights will restart to Portugal. The airport has introduced a Ten Point Plan of safety measures which includes over 100 hand sanitiser stations, enhanced cleaning and mandatory face mask wearing for staff and passengers, for which it has achieved two COVID secure accreditations. Newcastle is one of a small number of UK airports to be awarded accreditation for meeting the international guidance on COVID safety measures set out by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). The assessment was carried out by representatives from the Civil Aviation Authority, a medical professional, and a Public Health Expert – who also health-screened the airport’s employees’ mental health and wellbeing.
