Police allege Mr Stratton first attacked the woman with a frying pan, then a fire extinguisher, before stabbing her in the chest with a 30-centimetre knife. The New Zealand national appeared in Newcastle Local Court today after last night being charged with attempted murder and wounding a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. His solicitor Mark Ramsland said his client wished to express his regret and sadness for the incident .

Detectives began investigating alleged fraudulent activity by the man in January 2018. Just after midday yesterday, police attended a home in Mordue Street at Jesmond, where they arrested the 59-year-old. He was taken to Waratah Police Station and charged with nine counts of dishonestly obtaining financial advantage by deception. The man allegedly coerced three men in Coffs Harbour to invest in fraudulent business ventures totalling $1,589,000 between 2013 and 2015. Police allege all the funds were taken for personal use.

Two men have been charged and another arrested over their alleged role in a public place shooting and break-in at Lake Macquarie last night. Police were called to a house on Alhambra Street, Macquarie Hills, after reports of shots fired just before 6.50pm. A 49-year-old man inside the home suffered a graze to his wrist but didn’t need treatment. A woman was also inside but wasn’t injured. Officers from Lake Macquarie Police District established a crime scene and commenced an investigation. Police were told an Audi hatchback was seen leaving the scene. A short time later, about 7.25pm, police received reports of an attempted break-in at a club at Redhead involving an Audi hatchback; with three men allegedly seen leaving the scene in the car.
