Community-based organizations, medical providers, and elected officials made up the more than 200 volunteers who came out to go door to door. In addition to signing up those who are currently eligible for the vaccine, they also made sure to address any misinformation or concerns.
“I think it was important to come out so that we could raise awareness about the vaccine and encourage more people in the community to get vaccinated,” said Jaye George, a volunteer.
George is also a Quinnipiac University medical student and he said it’s about making sure people have access to the vaccine and know what that access is.
State politicians joined community organizers and hundreds of volunteers to knock on doors and schedule COVID shots in New Haven's Fair Haven neighborhood Saturday.
The mass vaccination site is run by Fair Haven Community Health Care and sixteen schools are holding clinics. Those locations have a school-based health centers, making it easy for nurses to vaccinate school staff.
“Rather than clogging up this site and the other site, we’ll make sure teachers can also go right there on their school site,” said school superintendent Ilene Tracey.
The Wilbur Cross location will run Tuesday through Friday for teachers and the general public.
Today @FairHavenCHC launched a mass #vaccination site at Wilbur Cross. Appointments were for @newhavenpublic1 staff, but they re taking patients and the public four days/week.

Meghan Casey, left, a nursing and public health student at Yale, and Amanda E. DeCew, an advanced practice registered nurse in pediatrics at Fair Haven Community Health Care in New Haven, go for a morning walk along Quinnipiac River Trail on Front Street. DeCew, also the clinic’s director for quality improvement and risk management, became interested in the benefits of nature therapy after hearing a podcast on the topic. She, and a few other colleagues, now prescribe outdoor activities to children and adults when they think it’s appropriate.
