Tokyo stocks closed lower on Friday as investors locked in profits ahead of a series of holidays in Japan.
The benchmark Nikkei 225 index closed down 0.83% at 28 812.63, while the broader Topix index lost 0.57% to 1 898.24.
Investors were closing their positions after a national holiday on Thursday and ahead of an extended weekend that will see the market closed from Monday until Wednesday.

TOKYO, April 30 (Reuters) - Japan s Nippon Yusen said on Friday that one passenger on its luxury cruise ship Asuka II had tested positive for the coronavirus, and that other passengers would be disembarking.
The passenger s health is stable and the person is recuperating in a cabin that has been isolated, it said in a statement. People who stayed in the same room as the passenger were the only ones who had been in close contact.
The ship departed Yokohama in Kanagawa Prefecture on Thursday and was scheduled to stop at Aomori and Hokkaido prefectures.
