How to catalog pandemic history

Daily diaries, paintings, and a photo of a birthday cake shaped like a roll of toilet paper all among the artifacts people have chosen to memorialize the year since COVID-19’s arrival. “When the pandemic began, we … thought immediately of the dilemma of how we archive such an important and dramatic unfolding event,” says Sarah Knott, professor of history at Indiana University Bloomington. At Indiana University, Knott and archivist Carrie Schwier launched an archive and invited volunteers from Monroe County residents and those affiliated with the university to submit diaries, but such projects have been popping up all over the country. Local historical societies, universities and libraries have spent the past year archiving the highs and the lows of the pandemic, racial justice marches, impeachment, and other defining events. These archives take the form of objects, photographs, and diaries selected by the community.

Arizona Highways magazine from 1996. For nearly 100 years, Arizona Highways magazine has captured the history and culture of the state. Their latest achievement: They’ve now digitized every issue of the storied magazine. Robert Stieve is the editor of Arizona Highways magazine.  Its purpose, really, was to tell the Arizona story. And we ve been doing that for almost 100 years. So thousands and thousands of pages covering the history, culture, landscape, and people of Arizona.  And over those years, we ve built this tremendous repository of Arizona history and information. But it was never available digitally.  And we thought that in the digital age, this is something that would make sense to have it accessible to everybody.
