Someone reminded me that it will be 23 days until spring if you get the paper on Friday or 24 days if you get the paper on Thursday. These are good numbers.
Inge Ackerman of Amherst sent me this news. Dr. Namandje Bumpus, featured as chief researcher on clinical trials at John Hopkins and discussed on Page A4 of the New York Times of Feb. 19, is an Amherst native. She is the daughter of the late Djata Bumpus, noted former boxing teacher in Northampton, and the niece of Eshu Bumpus, noted local folk historian and performer. The article includes her photo.

The agency, set up in 2019, has found cancer survival rates for all ethnicities have improved over the last 20 years but not as quickly as in other high-income countries. Around 25,000 people are diagnosed with cancer each year in New Zealand, of whom nearly 3000 are Māori.

Scott had felt she was part of a messed-up system and turned to public health, seeing it as a way to change the system. “I like a quote that I heard . ‘for a lot of our health issues, the question is not what should we be doing, but why aren t we doing it?’,” said Scott (Waikato, Ngāti Whātua and Ngāpuhi). So she created a series of questions for the whānau of those sick tamariki, asking about everything from car seats to GP enrolment and whether their home was cold and damp. The aim was to stop the kids getting sick again by connecting whānau with services to keep them safe and healthy.
