U-M biologist eager for arrival of Brood X cicadas, sixth emergence of these noisy 17-year bugs in his lifetime
University of Michigan
University of Michigan entomologist Thomas Moore spent years driving back roads across the eastern United States with his car windows rolled down, listening intently for the buzz of periodical cicadas.

“I’d drive all day long-as long as the weather was good-from one end of the population to the other. One little brief burst of song and I’d know who was singing,” said Moore, an emeritus professor of biology, now 91, who studied cicada sound production and perception.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – April showers bring May flowers.
With spring well on its way, we want to see your best shots around Tree Town.
Whether you stopped at Nichols Arboretum to capture flowers in bloom or snapped a shot of birds returning to your backyard birdfeeder, we want to see the moments you’ve captured so far this spring.
You have until noon on April 29 to submit as many photos as you want. The winners will be selected and featured in an article on May 1 and in one of Meredith’s newsletters.
A bystander allegedly was lapped by the AARP member at least three times.
Sources have confirmed that an elderly man was spotted walking in Nichols Arboretum at a pace significantly faster than the average pedestrian.
“I was walking through the peony garden when I heard rapid footsteps behind me,” said LSA junior Anthony Jackson. “I assumed that someone from MRun was approaching me, but when they passed me it was just this old geezer absolutely booking it.”
Witnesses report watching the aged “freak of nature” nimbly descend the stairs two-at-a-time “without even breaking a sweat.”
“He had his hand clasped behind his back and that typical old guy slouch, so I just assumed I would have to awkwardly walk behind him until the path widened,” said SMTD senior Alexandra Fey. “Next thing I know, that old coot lapped me.”
