In pact with Intel and Qualcomm Chinese budget phone-maker Honor has signed partnerships with major chip suppliers such as Intel and Qualcomm after being spun off from under-fire parent Huawei Technologies in a bid to save it last year, it said on Friday.
Huawei had sold Honor to a consortium of 30 of the sub-brand’s agents and dealers in November to help it resume sourcing components restricted by US sanctions.
As Chief Executive George Zhao launched the View40, Honor’s first phone model since the split, Honor said in a statement it now had its own deals with some tech firms.
Honor confirms partnership with Intel and Qualcomm
Huawei has been struggling to keep its smartphone business alive after the damage caused by the end of the Kirin chipset division. The company also lost access to future Android updates and most of its devices are now stuck on Android 10. The brand is running to make HarmonyOS a viable option for its handsets now. Back in November, the brand decided to sell its Honor brand to focus only on Huawei smartphones and also to protect Honor from falling in demise. Today, the brand unveiled the Honor V40 5G as its first smartphone as an independent company.
Device maker Honor, free from US-imposed supply-chain constraints now that its no longer part of Huawei, says it has bagged a number of chipset deals with various suppliers. They include US big-hitters Intel and Qualcomm.
Honor referenced the deals, which also include AMD, MediaTek, Micron Technology, Microsoft, Samsung, SK hynix and Sony, as part of an announcement about a new brand strategy for 2021 and the launch of new products.
CEO George Zhao, as reported by Reuters, reflected on the last five months as being an extremely difficult but meaningful time for Honor. He added, perhaps as a way of explanation for a new turn in direction, that we feel the weight of expectation from industry partners and consumers.
