House nears vote on police reform legislation

The Senate President is welcoming whatever bill the House provides.
The House is set to vote next week on bipartisan legislation to prevent excessive use of force by police officers.

Lawmakers throughout the committee process approved the measure, carried by Reps.
Cord Byrd, a Republican, and
Fentrice Driskell, a Democrat, unanimously.
Proponents say the bipartisan measure would help restore public trust in the police.
This month, lawmakers have considered the anti-riot bill (
HB 1), Republicans’ measure against violent protests that Democrats and other critics say would disproportionately affect minority protesters.

A resolution adopted by the Florida House says “democratic socialism is denounced in favor of the true American values of individual liberty, private property, and constitutional democracy.”

The Florida House has approved a resolution denouncing democratic socialism. The resolution is nonbinding, which means it has no effect other than sending a message.
Despite opposition from Democrats, the Republican-controlled Florida House on Tuesday adopted a resolution denouncing democratic socialism.
The measure (HR 145) describes democratic socialism as “a political and economic theory of social organization which advocates the ownership or regulation of production, distribution, and exchange by the community as a whole.”
The resolution said “democratic socialism is denounced in favor of the true American values of individual liberty, private property, and constitutional democracy.”
Bill sponsor Rep. Tom Fabricio, R-Miramar, said the measure is “a resolution for the Florida House to speak for our values and for our economic system.” But Rep. Anna Eskamani, D-Orlando, objected that the resolution did not condemn the infiltration of the U.S. Capito

A bill that would prohibit the practice of disability abortions passed through the Florida House Health and Human Services committee on Tuesday, though not without its detractors.
House Bill 1221 was filed by Rep. Erin Grall in late February. Sen. Ana Maria Rodriguez filed the identical SB 1664 within the same week. The bill would make it a felony for a physician in the state to perform an abortion if they knew the mothers sole reasoning for wanting the procedure was because they had found out their child would be born with a disability.
