Memories of Franklin teen killed in Vietnam War burn bright nearly 55 years later

John Willie Woods Jr. head and shoulders smiling (courtesy of the Woods family). Submitted On a spectacular spring morning, a large American flag, a much smaller one and faux flowers adorn John Willie Woods Junior’s gravestone at Toussaint L’Ouverture Cemetery in Franklin. More than half a century after his death in Vietnam, Mattie Lee Kinnard surely would be touched that her son is so well remembered.  Woods was only 19 when the helicopter he was aboard plunged into the jungle in a fiery explosion, killing him and three of his crewmates on Oct. 30, 1966. He was one of 342 American military deaths that month during the Vietnam War, one of 6,350 that year, one of 58,220 for the United States in the lengthy conflict.

Keeping the Pot Boiling

The rhetoric that earned the president Four Pinocchios   The stability of any democracy depends on the widespread perception of voters that if their candidates or views do not prevail in this election, they may well prevail in the next election. And that perception, in turn, requires that voters view the playing field as an even one. The very first piece of legislation passed by the Democratic majority of the House of Representatives  H.R. 1, titled the “For the People Act”  seeks to do just the opposite by nationalizing federal election law to an unprecedented degree, and making permanent a set of election procedures originally introduced in 2020 in response to COVID-19 and the fears of many voters of casting ballots in person. Those procedures would over time render in-person Election Day voting a relic of the past and dramatically increase the opportunities for fraud, thereby reducing citizens’ confidence in the integrity of the election system.

He was 93. His niece Sharon Welch announced the death. In becoming the nation’s top law enforcement official, Mr. Clark was part of an extraordinary father-and-son trade-off in the federal halls of power. His appointment prompted his father, Justice Tom C. Clark, to resign from the US Supreme Court to avoid the appearance of any conflict of interest involving cases in which the federal government might come before that bench.
