Fife coalfields communities receive funding to grow their own produce Updated: March 5, 2021, 9:42 am © Supplied by Grow West Fife Volunteer Megan de Gruyter hard at work in the garden. Mining communities across Fife are being supported to grow their own fruit and vegetables as part of a project to address food poverty. Funding totalling almost £90,000 has been awarded to more than 20 projects from Fife to Dumfries and Galloway to support the work of community groups, volunteers and other partners. One project to benefit from the Coalfields Regeneration Trust (CRT) cash is Grow West Fife, whose volunteers rescued an old walled garden at Blair Castle in Culross during lockdown last year to grow vegetables for local food projects.

Farnworth community rallies after burglars break into Nigel's Pet Supplies

THE Farnworth community has rallied after burglars broke into a pet supplies shop in the early hours of Tuesday. Two offenders, hooded up and wearing masks, forced their way into Nigel’s Pet Supplies on The Market Precinct at around 5.15am with a crowbar. Owner Nigel Cain, who has run his business for 32 years, was woken by an alert on his phone, which warned him that the shop alarm had gone off. He quickly made his way over to his store and called the police. Nigel, 53, from Farnworth, said: “When I was driving in I was hoping it was a false alarm.

Covid-19 pandemic has 'wiped out a decade of progress' in Fife's former coalfield areas

Sign Up A new report has suggested the Covid-19 pandemic has “wiped out” a decade of progress in Fife’s former coalfield communities. Researchers say unemployment in areas of older industrial Britain is now above the levels experienced 10 years ago in the wake of the financial crisis, with the increasingly likelihood of further redundancies in the coming months. The report by Sheffield Hallum University’s Centre for Regional Economic and Social Research, was commissioned by the Coalfields Regeneration Trust and the Industrial Communities Alliance to look at the impact of the coronavirus crisis on the economy, labour market and public health in former coalfield areas.
