The head of the Tokyo 2020 organizing committee, Seiko Hashimoto, has ruled out canceling or postponing the Games, despite doubts among the host cities and medical workers about the possibility of holding the event safely amid the outbreak of the Corona virus.
“We cannot postpone again,” Hashimoto said in an interview published by Nikkan Sports on Thursday.
The Asahi newspaper reported that Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga is likely to call early elections after the Olympics and Paralympic Games, which shows his intention to go ahead with organizing the event.
Interdiction of cities hosting training and competitions has increased amid fears visitors could spread different strains of the virus and drain medical resources.
