Waterside House on Water Street in Rochdale
An historic woollen mill which was among the first in Rochdale to switch to steam power is to be transformed into new apartments.
Planners have given the go-ahead for Grade II-listed Waterside House to be converted into 14 one and two-bedroom flats.
Dating back to the 1820s the red-brick building, on Water Street, is noted for its decorative facade, Venetian-style features and importance to the town’s heritage.
Although partly demolished in the 1970s, the warehouse and engine room – which was once fed by the River Roch – remain.
Council denies it planned to light up cenotaph to mark anniversary of George Floyd’s death Date published: 27 May 2021
Rochdale Cenotaph
Rochdale Council has denied it planned to light up the town’s war memorial for the anniversary of George Floyd’s death after coming under fire on social media.
It comes after the council tweeted a picture on Monday evening (24 May) of the cenotaph bathed in purple light with the message ‘#Rochdale landmarks will be lit purple tomorrow eve commemorating the 1st anniversary of the death of #George Floyd’.
George Floyd was an African-American man murdered in the street by a police officer, who knelt on his back and neck during an arrest in Minneapolis.
The bungalow on Lake Side
Planning permission is being sought to demolish a dilapidated bungalow overlooking Hollingworth Lake and replace it with two detached houses.
Construction work began on 15 Lake Side in 1998, but it has stood unfinished for years whilst being the subject of lengthy legal disputes.
The bungalow has been deemed to be ‘a blight on this attractive area of the borough’ by the council, which authorised a Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) on the house in 2018.
As previously reported by the Local Democracy Reporting Service, 15 Lake Side had been intended to be the dream retirement home for Dr Stephen Watkins and his wife Elizabeth. They had their hearts set on a new-build bungalow on the shores of Hollingworth Lake – complete with its own library for the hundreds of books Dr Watkins had collected over the years.
A developer has submitted plans for a ‘high quality’ apartment block in Heywood town centre.
The four-storey building would be built on vacant brownfield land between Earl Street, Taylor Street and Bethel Street, next to Trinity Methodist Church.
Described as ‘attractive’ and ‘well-designed’ the proposal would bring 23 new homes to the area – including 15 one-bedroom and eight two-bed apartments.
However, none of the flats would be affordable, as the developer Agron Elezi argues it would not be financially viable.
Mr Elezi has previously been at the centre of controversy in connection with two homes he built on vacant land in Halewood, Merseyside.
