Classic Match: The night the Reds conquered Rome again
Chris Shaw Liverpool s famous UEFA Cup victory over AS Roma 20 years ago today began with a helping hand from some SS Lazio fans.
As the Reds’ team bus crawled through traffic on its way to the Stadio Olimpico for the first leg of their last-16 tie in February 2001, a path was opened up by an escort from local policemen particularly eager to see the visitors arrive without disruption.
The reason? They supported Roma’s city rivals Lazio.
But their intervention proved the only assistance Gerard Houllier’s soon-to-be treble heroes would need on a night when they revealed to the whole of Europe their credentials as potential tournament winners with a 2-0 conquest.

Liverpool won a treble of cups in 2000/01, lifting the League Cup and FA Cup at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, before extending their reach to Europe and landing the UEFA Cup as well.
The late, great Gerard Houllier was the man in charge, assembling a team that blended home-grown talents with players that he had brought to the club from across Europe. Such was his transformation of the squad, only one inherited player that hadn’t come through the youth ranks was left by the midway stage of the treble season - and that was fan favourite Patrik Berger.

A big midweek clash sees
Tottenham and Liverpool clash in a battle for the number one spot at Christmas, with the Reds having the better form in recent clashes between the two clubs. Spurs haven’t beaten the Merseysiders since a 4-1 win at Wembley in 2017. Dele Alli found the net that day and although he’s unlikely to be the hero this time round, one of Klopp’s or Mourinho’s men could well set their side back on track after disappointing draws at the weekend.
