Sign Up Updated active travel masterplans for Wick and Thurso will be used by councillors when considering future development for the towns and to help attract future funding. The plans are aimed at making it safer for people to walk, cycle and use wheelchairs, as well as reducing congestion, improving air quality and improving footfall in town centres. The plans were developed by Highland Council and transport partnership Hitrans and have been updated following consultation which was done virtually due to Covid.

Sign Up Councillors have agreed to spend more than £40,000 upgrading ageing CCTV cameras in Wick and Thurso. Members of Highland Council’s Caithness committee voted to use town centre funding to digitalise the analogue systems and connect them to the authority’s CCTV monitoring office. A total of £16,100 will be used to upgrade the Wick town centre system and £25,625 for Thurso. In September the Scottish Government announced extra funding through the Town Centre Fund as part of its national economic recovery stimulus package. Highland Council received an additional £1,066,000, providing an extra £56,104 for investing into Thurso and Wick.

Members of the committee agreed yesterday (Friday) to use town centre funding to enhance the local surveillance system – £16,100 will be used to digitalise the existing ageing analogue public space CCTV in Wick and connect the new system into the council’s monitoring office with £25,625 to do the same for Thurso.

It’s part of the Spaces for People programme underway across the Highlands, and will enhance the active travel environment for walking and wheeling in the area. The work includes improving dropped and pedestrian crossings, making it safer and more convenient to travel actively around main routes. Phase 1 is for North Road, George Street and several side streets in Wick.

Sign Up Wick Harbour was once renowned as Europe’s busiest herring port and now some renewed efforts are being made to highlight the area’s rich history. The Pulteneytown part of the community was masterminded by engineer Thomas Telford in the 18th century, and is the only fully executed town plan which he carried out for the British Fisheries Society.
