New e-commerce platforms were launched on simris.com for the US market and eu.simris.com for Sweden and the EU.

Representatives from the European Union’s 27 member states have approved Tenebrio molitor beetle larvae, also known as mealworms, as “innovative” food and suitable for human consumption. The ruling by the Standing Committee on Plants, Animals, Food and Feed (Novel Food and Toxicological Safety section) represents the next step in allowing people in the bloc to eat beetle larvae after the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA) said in January that yellow mealworms were safe to eat. Outlining why Europeans might want to eat bugs, the European Commission said when it announced the decision: “The use of insects as an alternate source of protein is not new and insects are regularly eaten in many parts of the world.”

UK CBD market ‘the world’s second largest behind US’, association body claims Consumer demand for CBD products has soared during lockdown, according to the Association for the Cannabinoid Industry (ACI), which estimates the sector will generate £690 million in annual sales this year, above a previous forecast of £526 million. The body’s new report, jointly written with the Centre for Medicinal Cannabis (CMC), concludes that the UK now has the most evolved regulatory framework in the world for CBD, citing recent interventions by the Foods Standards Agency to consider what are safe and tolerable levels of THC contained in products. The FSA began formally accepting Novel Foods applications for CBD products from January 2021.

Future of food: EU approves Yellow mealworm as novel food Oana Vasiliu 05/05/2021 | 12:00     This new type of food is known as “innovative food” or “novel food” and the European Commission recently considered that it is safe to eat.  “The use of insects as an alternate source of protein is not new and insects are regularly eaten in many parts of the world,” the commission noted, announcing the decision. It’s for the first time an insect was being authorised as food in the EU, the commission did say that insects had previously been available for consumption in some member states. Moreover, the commission said there are currently 11 other applications for insects to become “novel food” in the EU and they will be considered by the European Food Safety Authority.
