Man wins retrial over woman’s murder The Court of Appeal has ruled a man should not have been convicted of the murder of a Brisbane woman, and ordered a retrial. Crime by Kay Dibben Premium Content Subscriber only A man who has been serving a life sentence for the murder of a Brisbane mother in 2014 has been granted a retrial, after a successful appeal. Jacob Michael Smith was found guilty by a jury in April 2018 of the murder of a woman, 34, at Norman Park in August 2014. Smith also had been on trial at the same time for the rape, attempted rape and assault occasioning bodily harm of a girl, 12, and stealing, allegedly committed after the murder.

Arrests • Labrian Demon Jackson, 29, 1022 Fifth Ave. S.W., was charged May 4 with probation violation. • Zachery Arthur Smith, 28, 820 Sixth St. S.E., was charged May 4 with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. • Michael Dewayne, 44, 400 Ninth Ave. S.E., was charged May 4 with aggravated stalking. • Cameron Edwin Hartley, 21, 1342 Lonnie Bookard Road, Norman Park, was charged May 3 with failure to appear. • Parker John Somerindyke, 22, 1051 Doerun-Norman Park Road, Norman Park, was charged May 5 with probation violation. • Richard Elbert Goodno, 51, 201 Talmadge Road, was charged May 4 with aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

Kishen Patel, of Norman Park, was treated for cuts on his left arm at Colquitt Regional Medical Center, according to the Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office report of the accident. A hospital spokeswoman said he was treated and released the same day. Patel, in a 2010 Dodge Ram pickup, was traveling west on Cool Springs Road about 2:15 p.m. as Luiz Rodriguez, also of Norman Park, approached, traveling east on a 2019 John Deere tractor pulling equipment behind it.

Arrests Incidents • Officers were dispatched to the 700 block of Fifth Avenue Southeast on April 30 in reference to damage to property. The victim advised officers that a brick was thrown through their “room window” and their vehicle’s tires had been slashed, wiper blades broken and the rear passenger door scratched. The total estimate of damages was not disclosed. • Officers were dispatched to the 1000 block of 10th Street Southeast on April 30 in reference to a theft. The complainant stated that their patio set had been stolen out of their front lawn. The set included an umbrella, table and two high chairs. The estimated value of the set is $400.
