Expected Federal Relief For MTA Will Avert Drastic Service Cuts

With Democrats’ passage of the $2 trillion COVID-19 relief bill in the Senate over the weekend, Majority Leader Chuck Schumer ensured that it included $6.5 billion for the MTA. While that sum is still short of the $8 billion the MTA projected it would need to get through 2024, the agency expects it’s enough to stave off the worst doomsday scenarios it had been projecting as recently as December.
“We will avoid drastic service cuts on subways, buses, Metro-North and Long Island Rail Road as a result of this federal funding in President Biden s American Rescue Plan, and we also will avoid layoffs and furloughs of thousands of our colleagues,” MTA Chairman Pat Foye said Monday morning, speaking on WCBS. “It s great news for MTA customers and employees.”

NORTHAMPTON Massachusetts General Hospital’s chief of emergency medicine, and a 1981 Amherst Regional High School graduate, will assume the role of interim president and chief executive officer at Cooley Dickinson Health Care on Monday.
Dr. David F.M. Brown, a member of Cooley Dickinson’s board of trustees since 2013, takes over for Joanne Marqusee, who is stepping down after seven years at the helm of the Northampton hospital.
“I’ve seen the progress this organization made under Joanne Marqusee’s leadership and I’m looking forward to building on her legacy,” Brown said in a statement.
It is with profound sadness the family announces the passing of Edward Francis O’Brien. Ed died peacefully at home with his children by his side.
“I was born April 17, 1940 into a wonderful life. I attended the initial year of teacher’s training in Thunder Bay and practised for thirty-nine years as teacher and principal in the Thunder Bay Catholic School System.
