State Sen. Rob Standridgeâs opposition to diversity training (with two other white male Republican senators, of Transcript 4-25) strikes me as a classic dog whistle for exclusivity by those who want to deny the continued unequal treatment of minorities, women and the LGBTQ community.
The United States has much to be proud of, and a potentially celebratory future. We should not, however, blithely dismiss the genocide, slavery and second-classness that are part of our past and continue to impact many of our fellow Americans.
Only a generation back, we had an active Klan and the John Birch Society, from which have sprouted the white supremacists and Confederate revisionists that constitute a vociferous part of the new Republican base. Some people just refuse to acknowledge they lost, just as they refuse to accommodate others.

After two vacancies in one year, nearly a dozen new and former candidates applied for the Norman City Councilâs interim Ward 2 seat.Â
The Ward 2 carousel began after the sudden death of former Ward 2 councilmember David Perry last August. The seat was filled by a city council appointee and former Ward 2 councilmember, Joe Carter, who did not seek permanent election in the February 2021 election.Â
OU Russian Professor Matt McGarry won the February election with 51.34 percent of the vote, according to the Oklahoma State Election Board. McGarry resigned the following month to accept a job offer at an Ivy League institution, prompting another vacancy.Â

The Norman High School Cheer STUNT team pose for a photo. NHS STUNT won the State Championship, completing a perfect season last weekend. Provided Photo
The Norman High School STUNT cheer team brought new hardware home after winning the state championship and achieving a perfect season this month.
NHS, along with many other Class 6A schools, now competes in an emerging style of cheer competition that focuses on the technical skills found in cheerleading like stunts, jumps tumbling and basket tossing in a four quarter-style game between programs.
In its third season competing in the sport, NHS STUNT won the state championship at Oklahoma Baptist University last weekend, capping off a perfect season with a 12-0 record.

Oklahoma Arts Councilâs Director of Arts in Public Places Jarica Walsh has connections to Norman that remain deep and strong. Provided Photo
Central Normanâs majestic mature tree canopy inspired a little girl who grew up here to be an artist in a very tangible way.
Love of nature and the ways it can be captured in art became a dual career later in her life. Jarica Walsh is both an accomplished printmaker and ceramicist, along with being the Oklahoma Arts Councilâs Director of Arts in Public Places.
The council is the official state agency for the support and development of the arts in Oklahoma. Walsh is a graduate of Norman High School and holds a BFA from the University of Oklahoma.
