Asheboro girls reach 3A title with 54-44 win at Northwood Tags: By Joel Bryant, HighSchoolOT reporter Pittsboro, N.C. The Asheboro Blue Comets girls basketball team won the 3A Eastern Regional Final at Northwood High School over the host Chargers on Tuesday night. The Blue Comets never trailed during the game and won 54-44. Asheboro got off to a hot start. Senior shooting guard Ashton Maness hit two early 3-pointers to help Asheboro out to a 9-2 lead within a couple of minutes. Maness went on to finish the game with 13 points. At the under 4:00 timeout in the first quarter, Asheboro had a 13-6 lead. The two teams combined for only six points in the rest of the third quarter, with four of them going to the Blue Comets.

Pittsboro Board Addresses Fire Truck Purchase, Microbrewery Definition, UDO and More in Whirlwind Meeting The board of commissioners stepped through several action items in its regular meeting on Monday, voting on land use proposals, town ordinance on microbreweries, a resolution of support for congressional climate change legislation and more. New fire truck The board held a public hearing to consider a proposed installment loan between the Pittsboro Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department and First Bank to fund purchase of a new ladder truck. The loan amount would not exceed $1,433,477. While the decision to approve the loan agreement fell to the town’s board of commissioners, the entire responsibility for loan repayment would fall to the PVFD.

Eight FFA Advisors Selected for Indiana Golden Owl Award Nomination

The Indiana FFA Association and the Indiana State Department of Agriculture, in partnership with Nationwide Insurance and Farm Credit Mid-America, have selected eight Indiana FFA agriculture educators as nominees for a Golden Owl Award. Nationwide established the Golden Owl Award to honor teachers and support them with additional resources to assist their continued educational efforts in preparing the next generation for successful agricultural careers. “Our agricultural educators have committed so much extra time and resources to their students this year, with re-planning almost every FFA event and reworking lessons plans to become virtual, I am thankful that Nationwide Insurance and Farm Credit Mid-America allowed us the opportunity to give back to them,” said Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch. “I appreciated the opportunity to participate in awarding these eight deserving Hoosier educators.”

Monoson is the co-editor-in-chief of the West Henderson school newspaper, Wingspan. Judges noted her clarity and expressiveness in writing and design, as well as the quality and variety of sourcing. Alternates for Journalist of the Year were Cassie Honeycutt of First Flight High School in Kill Devil Hills, Ella Sullivan of Northwood High School in Pittsboro and Tierney Reardon of J.H. Rose High School in Greenville. Honeycutt is the co-editor-in-chief of her school’s newspaper, Nighthawk News Magazine; Sullivan is the co-editor-in-chief of her school newspaper, The Northwood Omniscient; and Reardon is the co-editor-in-chief of her school newspaper, Rampant Lines.
