Wilson Betemit Jr., RHP, Dominican Republic
This name will ring a bell. Indeed, Betemit is the son of the former Royals (among other teams) infielder. Betemit Jr. was also a middle infielder growing up. As he aged and the Royals’ coordinator of their Dominican Academy, Victor Baez, saw Betemit’s arm, he suggested the Royals put him on the mound.
The Royals watched Betemit for a year, evaluating how he looked in games. They saw the potential of the arm and an understanding of how to pitch.

“Our entire organization is devastated by this news” said Tides General Manager Joe Gregory. “RJ was a fantastic manager who always got so much out of his players, but he was an even better person behind the scenes. His personality and love of the game made him one of baseball’s outstanding people, and he’ll truly be missed.”

Each year, the Winter Meetings is one of the most exciting weeks of the MLB offseason. The hot stove is heating up, the winter holidays and a new year are just around the corner, and Spring Training is only a couple of months away.
Despite taking place virtually, this year’s Winter Meetings were no different. Throughout the week, the Orioles’ Baseball Operations department was hard at work, doing everything from attending virtual meetings with executives from other clubs to fortifying the farm system, and even adding some talent at the Major League level through the annual Rule 5 Draft.
