Volvo is partnering with DiDi Chuxing s Autonomous Driving division to build a fleet of self-driving vehicles, the companies announced Monday.Â
DiDi, a Chinese Uber competitor with more than 550 million users and tens of millions of drivers, is providing its self-driving hardware platform called Gemini, which will be deployed into Volvo s XC90 SUVs.Â
The companies expect for these vehicles to eventually be driverless robotaxis. In expanding partnerships with global automotive industry leaders, we believe shared, electric and autonomous vehicle networks will be crucial for future urban transport systems to achieve the highest safety and sustainability standards, Bob Zhang, CEO of DiDi Autonomous Driving and CTO of DiDi Chuxing, said in a statement.Â

Volvo has signed an agreement to provide cars to the autonomous driving technology unit of China s top ride-hailing firm, Didi Chuxing, for its self-driving test fleet.
Volvo will provide XC90 SUVs equipped with backup steering and braking systems that DiDi Autonomous Driving will integrate with DiDi Gemini, its new self-driving hardware platform, the automaker said in a statement on Monday.

Didi Autonomous Driving and Volvo reach strategic cooperation
Today, Volvo Cars and Didi Chuxing’s autonomous driving company signed a strategic cooperation agreement, and the two parties will cooperate on the autonomous driving test fleet. Volvo Cars will provide Didi Autonomous Driving with XC90 models that support steering and braking redundancy systems. By integrating the software and hardware systems required for autonomous driving, the vehicle will be fully capable of autonomous driving. Volvo XC90 is the first model to integrate Didi’s new hardware platform for autonomous driving. It will be used in Didi’s autonomous driving road tests in the future.

Didi Chuxing, mostly known for having purchased Uber China, is announcing the next step in the development and testing of their Didi Autonomous Driving technology, called Gemini. In order to create a future robotaxi fleet, the Chinese ride-hailing company is partnering up with Volvo.
