North County Report: San Pasqual Academy Supporters Sue to Stay Open

San Pasqual Academy / Photo by Adriana Heldiz There’s a new phase in the movement to keep San Pasqual Academy, a boarding school for foster youth in Escondido, open: A group of nine residents, alumni and staff is suing the state and the county for moving to shut down the facility. The group is seeking to secure the facility’s future. It’s asking the court to order the California Department of Social Services to create a unique licensing and funding category to allow it to stay open past June 2022 and continue to serve foster youth across the county. Kimberley Johnson, the director of the California Department of Social Services; Nick Macchione, the director of the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency; and the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency are named as defendants in the suit.

Undersheriff Kelly Martinez announces plans to run for sheriff

SAN DIEGO    Undersheriff Kelly Martinez has announced plans to run for San Diego County sheriff, seeking to replace Sheriff Bill Gore, who last week said he would not be seeking another term. Martinez, 58, has worked for the Sheriff’s Department for 36 years and in February was named the department’s undersheriff, becoming second in command in the agency. She is the first woman to hold that post. “Public safety is my highest priority,” she said in a statement. “As Sheriff, San Diego County residents can trust that I will put the safety of our communities first. I will ensure fair policing for all.”
