“I would certainly encourage you to talk with your neighbors and people in your neighborhood, particularly those who may have difficulty driving or not their own vehicle to absolutely connect with them and consider them a part of your evacuation plan, he responded. And take your neighbors out with you if they have no other means to get out.”
Garibay added that ride-sharing is more likely in urban or densely populated areas compared to remote, rural communities. But for neighbors who lack a vehicle or have mobility issues, having a carpool arrangement before disaster strikes can better help them escape.
Public invited to webinar on wildfire preparation, prevention
SALEM, Ore. (KTVZ) May is Wildfire Awareness Month, and the Oregon Office of Emergency Management is scheduled to host a wildfire preparedness and prevention panel webinar event on Thursday in partnership with Keep Oregon Green, the Oregon Office of State Fire Marshal, Oregon Department of Forestry, Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office and the Oregon State University Forestry & Natural Resources Extension Fire Program.

SISTERS, Ore. (KTVZ) – A Beaverton man climbing South Sister alone called 911 for help Monday morning when he got stuck on a small, precarious ledge at 9,800 feet elevation, prompting a challenging, day-long rescue effort in which an Oregon Army National Guard helicopter crew hoisted him to safety, officials said.
There are roles for medical, non-medical residents to help out
REDMOND, Ore. (KTVZ) Over the past week, the Deschutes County Fairgrounds vaccination site has been able to give COVID-19 doses to more than 4,000 Central Oregonians, including about 3,000 educators.
The vaccination site is a regional effort between St. Charles Health System, the Deschutes County Health Services and the Deschutes County Sheriff s Office.
More than 100 volunteers have been helping the vaccination site reach its goals.
“Volunteers will continue to be important, and probably become more important as this goes on,” Lt. Nathan Garibay told NewsChannel 21 on Monday.
And more help is needed. The health department is asking for medical and non-medical professionals to volunteer.
