(AP) Louisiana authorities are investigating the death of an inmate at a detention center in the northern part of the state. Vernell Brooks, 38, of Natchitoches was found unresponsive early Thursday in his cell at the Natchitoches Parish Detention Center. Brooks was transported to the Natchitoches Regional Medical Center where attempts to revive him were unsuccessful, news outlets reported. Sheriff Stuart Wright said the Natchitoches Parish Coroner’s Office has ordered an autopsy to determine the cause of death. Wright did not provide details on the sentence or crime Brooks was being held on.

NPSO sheriff: Investigation of mail theft leads to seizure of child porn, arrest

NATCHITOCHES, La. An 8-month long investigation described as disturbing has resulted in the arrest of a Natchitoches man on hundreds of criminal charges, including child pornography, narcotics, theft and identity theft, Sheriff Stuart Wright said Wednesday afternoon in a news release.  The investigation started with the discovery of a duffle bag full of mail from Natchitoches businesses that evolved into the seizure of images child pornography and sex acts involving animals pulled from the dark web.  As a result, 33-year-old Christopher Aaron Stanfield of Natchitoches was booked into the Natchitoches Parish Detention Center. His bonds total $884,000.  Stanfield was targeted with an investigation in May 2020 when the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Deputies contacted the NPSO Criminal Investigations Division about Stanfield s arrest on narcotics, weapon and property offenses. Source: NPSO Louisiana State Police and Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Deputies arrested a Gorum man and his girlfriend in connection with a pursuit in Natchitoches and Rapides Parishes Thursday afternoon. DANIEL RISTER The pursuit began Jan. 28 at approximately 4:40 p.m., when LSP Trooper John Axsom clocked a Ford Focus on stationary radar speeding 101 mph in a posted 75 mph speed zone. The Ford was traveling southbound on I-49 near milepost #116 south of Cloutierville. LSP attempted to stop the vehicle, however, the violator led State Police on a pursuit. It exited I-49 at the Chopin exit, travelled west on La. Hwy 490 into the Janie community, then through the communities of Gorum then Mora in Rapides Parish.
