K Sasikala - a close aide of late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa - is to be released from jail on the morning of January 27, her lawyer, Raja Sethurapandian, said Tuesday night, citing an communique from Bengaluru jail officials.
Sasikala, who became party chief after Jayalalithaa died in 2016, was jailed four years ago in a disproportionate assets case, in which the former Chief Minister was the principal accused, and is scheduled to be released after paying a Rs 10 crore fine.
The Tamil Nadu Finance Minister today urged the Union Finance Ministry to take more initiatives not just to support the States, but to ensure a sustained revival of the economy. He also suggested that no abrupt fiscal correction should be attempted during 2021-22. Ahead of the Union Budget, Tamil Nadu also suggested that the borrowing limit by States should be up to 5 per cent of GDP, called for continuation of discussions on the compensation mechanism and devolving further taxation powers on States, extension of the period under the tax loss carry forward (TLCF) scheme for auto industry and some relaxations for construction industry.
States want cess/surcharges subsumed in basic tax rate
January 18, 2021 States today urged the Centre to merge cess and surcharges into the basic tax rate.
This was among the various suggestions given during the pre-Budget consultations Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had with States and three Union Territories with legislature (Delhi, Puducherry and Jammu & Kashmir) on Monday.
A Finance Ministry statement said that Sitharaman highlighted the importance of the meeting as a sign of cooperative federalism and indicated the manner in which the Union government was strongly supporting the States/Union Territories fight the pandemic.
States’ views
Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister O Paneerselvam said the levy of cesses and surcharges by the Centre deprives States of their legitimate share of the tax revenue. “All such cesses and surcharges should be merged into the basic rate of tax so that the States also receive their due share from the additional revenue,” he said.

Tamil Nadu leaders, cutting across the political spectrum, have strongly condemned the demolition of the Mullivaikkal memorial at Jaffna University campus in Sri Lanka.
Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Edappadi K Palaniswami took to Twitter to strongly condemn the demolition and said, The news that a monument erected at the Jaffna University campus in memory of university students and the general public who were mercilessly killed in the final phase of the war in Mullivaikkal, Sri Lanka, has been demolished overnight is shocking. I strongly condemn this monthly act of the Government of Sri Lanka which has caused great pain to the Tamils of the world and to the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jaffna who accompanied it, Palaniswami said in another tweet.
