HHS Proposes Changes to HIPAA Privacy Rule

Tuesday, December 22, 2020 As part of its Regulatory Sprint to Coordinated Care, the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recently proposed important changes to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) privacy rule. The changes are designed to enhance individuals’ involvement in their care, remove barriers to coordinated care and ease administrative burdens under the HIPAA privacy rule. If finalized, the changes would require significant modifications to regulated entities’ policies and procedures, training and notice of privacy practices (NPP). Interested stakeholders have until 60 days after the publication of the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) in the federal register to provide comments.
