KNOXVILLE, Tenn. Less than a year after a committee was formed to advise the Knox County Mayor and Knox County Commission about public health issues, commissioners are considering a resolution that would end it.
They were scheduled for a work session on Monday, which included discussing a resolution that would end the Knox County Committee on Health and Economic Well-Being. In the resolution, local lawmakers said that the committee is no longer needed due to a change in circumstances.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. The Knox County School board may consider varying security from school to school depending on the needs and wants of the community, the board s vice chair said Thursday.
Virginia Babb indicated everything is on the table and expressed her desire for the board to consider community input as part of its upcoming process to re-examine armed officers in schools after the deadly police shooting of a teenager at Austin-East.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. A man arrested for drunk driving after he fell asleep at a red light will spend at least 45 days in jail and pay a hefty fine.
According to the Knox Co. District Attorney General s office, a jury convicted Luis Alexis Briceno, 25, of multiple charges including DUI Second Offense this week. He will be sentenced on June 24.
At trial, prosecutors said another driver called police because a man seemed to be asleep at the wheel at the red light at Kingston Pike and Morell Road. The driver said the car hadn t moved for several light cycles.

In a wide-ranging interview Thursday, the head of the Knox County Health Department said the school district should keep its mask requirement, warned of falling vaccine uptake and reiterated her desire for a county-wide face-covering mandate. COVID is still very much present in our community. People are still getting sick from COVID and getting hospitalized from COVID, and dying from COVID, and we also really haven’t had enough time for enough people to get fully vaccinated, Doctor Martha Buchanan said.

KNOX COUNTY, Tenn. The Knox County Commission on Monday honored former WBIR anchor Russell Biven for his many years of service to the East Tennessee community.
Commissioner Justin Biggs read the resolution honoring Russell on the occasion of his retirement from WBIR, expressing the county s gratitude for his dedication to the community and the many lives he has touched and inspired over the years.
Biggs spoke of Russell s career, Volunteer spirit and history of community service as a public figure, including how his annual Summer Clayfest Tournament has raised nearly $1 million for the Helen Ross McNabb Center.
