We ve witnessed progressive return of peace in N/East – Defence Minister

By Naomi Sharang Abuja, March 30, 2021 The Minister of Defence, Maj.-Gen. Bashir Magashi (Rtd.) says the military has recorded a progressive return of peace to the North-East. He stated this when the Senate Committee on Defence, led by its Chairman, Sen. Aliyu Wamakko visited the ministry on Tuesday for oversight. Magashi who said that Nigeria had been contending with diverse internal security challenges, noted that peace was returning to some parts of the country affected by insurgents. “Nigeria has been contending with diverse internal security challenges even as it grapples with the unconventional warfare waged against her by the terrorist group, Boko Haram and banditry in some states like Niger, Katsina, Kaduna, Sokoto and Zamfara.

Bill to prohibit casualisation of workers passes 2nd reading in senate

This was sequel to the presentation of the lead debate on the general principles of the bill by the sponsor, Sen. Ayo Akinyelure (PDP-Ondo) during plenary on Thursday. The bill is titled: “A Bill for an Act to provide for the prohibition of casualisation in all forms of employment in the private and public sector in Nigeria and for related matters”. Leading the debate, Akinyelure said that the bill was read for the first time on the floor of the Senate on March 4, 2020.

Bill to curtail proliferation of illegal arms into Nigeria passes 2nd reading

This followed the presentation of the lead debate on the general principles of the bill by the sponsor, Sen. Uba Sani (APC-Kaduna) during Tuesday’s plenary. The Bill is titled: “A Bill for an Act to alter the Firearms Act to among other provisions, increase the imposition of fines for offences, provide for the destruction of firearms illegally imported into the country”. Leading the debate, Sani, the chairman Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and other Financial Institutions said the bill was first read on the floor of the Senate on Nov. 25, 2020.

Sen Na Allah wants FG to evolve policies against kidnappings, banditry

Bala Ibn-Na’Allah, Chairman, Senate Committee on Air Force has urged the Federal Government to evolve policies that would make kidnapping and banditry less attractive in the country. Na’Allah made the call in an interview with newsmen on Monday in Abuja. “Government must come out with policies that will make kidnapping and banditry less attractive. Because if people have alternative means of survival, more than half of them will not go into crime. “These are issues that have to do with policies; issues that have to do with us as citizens, making sure that everyone who lives in this country has some level of comfort that he can derive from those charged with the responsibility of governance,” he said.

Ndume urges youths to track social intervention fund in 2021 budget

Ali Ndume (APC-Borno) on Thursday, urged youths in the country to tract implementation of the social intervention fund of the Federal Government in 2021 budget to ensure its full implementation. He said this while briefing news men in Abuja on Thursday. Ndume who is Chairman of Senate Committee on Army said that the 2021 budget has many intervention for youths and the poor. “As such you should follow your money,” he said. While observing that the 2020 budget has recorded high level of implementation so far, the lawmaker, however, said that much still needed to be done.
