ROANOKE, Va. – Need to make room for all the new gifts you got this Christmas? Goodwill Industries of the Valleys needs donations this winter.
Goodwill needs clothing and household items, which it sells to fund services for the community like mentoring and job assistance programs.
People typically donate less this time of year, but the need for Goodwill’s services has doubled in 2020.
So these donations will go a long way.
“Individuals who donate to Goodwill are really helping their communities and the people in their communities, so when you’re giving to Goodwill, you’re really helping your neighbor,” said Chelsea Moran, the marketing and public relations manager for Goodwill Industries of the Valleys, which serves the New River, Shenandoah, and Roanoke Valleys.

A $10 million donation to Goodwill Industries of the Valleys will benefit the nonprofit and people in the 35 counties it serves for years to come.
The Roanoke-based Goodwill chapter announced Wednesday it received a $10 million contribution from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott, of the Amazon e-commerce fortune.
âIâve been around for 47 years with Goodwill,â said Goodwill of the Valleys President Bruce Phipps. âIn my career, Iâve never had something of this magnitude in support of Goodwill ever happen.â
The donation, which comes as part of a nationwide $4 billion philanthropic campaign by Scott, is transformative for the local Goodwill organization, Phipps said.

ROANOKE, Va – A non-profit in Southwest Virginia received $10 million to help get people back to work.
The massive donation by author and philanthropist Mackenzie Scott is the largest donation Goodwill Industries of the Valleys has ever received.
As millions of Americans struggle with unemployment, Goodwill staff said the money is more important now than ever before.
“This gift really allows us to better leverage the resources we currently have, and the future resources we hope that the community will continue to support, we will see greater impact, and especially during this tough time, I think it’s going to be so important,” said President & CEO of Goodwill Industries of the Valleys Bruce Phipps.
