The Community Editorial Board wanted to conclude Black History Month with an editorial about the state of Black Long Beach. We had questions. About demographics, educational equity, economic inclusion, health equity, and policing disparities. We found partial answers from different sources and different years.

From what we can gather, Long Beach is 12.5% Black with a majority of its Black residents residing in 90805. This population percentage has remained relatively stable for the past 40 years.
Long Beach Unified School District suspension rates for Black students are disproportionately high. Black students are almost 14 times more likely to be suspended than White students. However, Black students are graduating from high school on par with their peers.

The end result was a 62-page strategic plan presented to the City Council Tuesday that moves the city closer to giving young people a stronger voice in local governance, along with more resources to help them succeed.
“The timing is amazing,” said Jennefer Heng, lead organizer at Khmer Girls in Action, an organization involved with the plan.
Heng was referring to the COVID-19 pandemic that led to a damaged economy and social isolation among youth. Now more than ever, young people need resources to help them “bounce back.”
Those resources could include mental health and wellness services, more career pathways, affordable housing, affordable transportation and more safe spaces, both virtual and physical.

The sit-in of Arab tribes in El Geneina, capital of West Darfur, has entered its second week. The protestors have closed all roads to and from the city.
Delegations from Zalingei and Nyala arrived at the sit-in square in Kubari El Naseem in El Geneina to support the protestor’s demands to dismiss state governor Mohamed El Doma, move the camps for displaced people from the city, and restructure the state police force.
The closure of roads is isolating the city of El Geneina and causes a rise in prices of goods.

Nearly seven years after the abduction of Chibok schoolgirls by the Boko Haram terrorist group, some of the girls have finally escaped.
While expressing joy about the news, stakeholders who spoke with DAILY POST asked the Federal Government to speak to Nigerians about the purported escape of the girls.
This newspaper gathered that one of the abducted girls, Halima Ali Maiyanga put a call to her father yesterday. The Chairman of the Chibok Parents Association, Lawal Zannah, whose daughter was among those abducted also confirmed the news.
Not releasing a statement, according to the stakeholders, is a minus for Buhari administration, saying, it shows that they lack the capacity to free any captive.
