Midwest Traveler: Eating your way through Appleton, Wis. The Wisconsin city is full of sweet surprises but not necessarily apples.

Don’t expect apples to be jumping out at you in Appleton, Wis. I found one on a recent trip, and it was a doozy. But others like it might be gone by the time you get here. We’ll circle back to my singular apple, but first consider that this city, hugging the Fox River, was named for someone named Appleton not because it was once a town full of apples.

Wardens Paul Hartrick, of Oconto Falls, and Gaven Brault, of Green Bay, responded to a complaint of two bucks locked at the horns. The wardens arrived and observed a large buck dragging a dead buck through the woods. Hartrick placed a catch pole on the buck’s antlers and pulled him to the ground. Brault then held the live buck down and Hartrick handed the catch pole to the reporting party to hang on to. Hartrick then used a saw to cut the dead buck’s antlers out of the entanglement. The large buck was then released with no apparent injuries.
Police responded to reports of shots fired near the mall s food court shortly after 3:30 p.m. Jan. 31. Some shoppers fled the mall, while others found places to hide.
The shots were fired after Ellis and Frausto, who were both at the mall with separate groups of friends, began to exchange words, apparently over a girl in Ellis group that used to talk to Frausto, according to the criminal complaint.
Ellis told Frausto, I will shoot this place up. I will kill you, then flashed a gun moments before he opened fire, the complaint says. Ellis fled out the doors near GameStop after he fired at Frausto.
