A group of Shady Side Academy Junior and Middle School families organized a “No Hungry Kids!” fundraiser to support the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank in December and raised more than $5,300.
The Delfyett, Iannetti, Khalil, Walsh and Zureikat families created a video that was shown during Zoom assemblies at both schools and also emailed to parents to educate the community about hunger and the importance of nutrition. The team of students raised $5,301 from 67 donors.

Aspinwall officials are crediting a strong housing market for helping to maintain the property tax rate in 2021, despite increased spending and pandemic impacts.
Aspinwall Council approved the borough’s $2.8 million budget, which holds the real estate tax rate at 6.86 mills.
The owner of a home assessed at $100,000 will again pay $686 to the borough in property tax.
Residents also pay 19.86 mills in Fox Chapel Area School District taxes, which is $1,986 on a home assessed at $100,000.
Manager Melissa Lang-O’Malley said personnel costs rose this year due to negotiated pay increases and that she expects slight increases in other typical borough expenses.
The band will play on for Fort Ligonier’s Twelfth Night celebration, just not in person.
One of the most popular programs at Ligonier’s reconstructed 18th-century fort, the fourth-annual Twelfth Night event will be held virtually on Jan. 9 because of covid-19 pandemic restrictions.
“It’s one of our most favorite events,” said Julie Donovan, the fort’s director of marketing and public relations. “It’s great to have this opportunity to make it virtual. We knew how much everyone was going to miss it.”
Participants will be able to enjoy the event’s period music and recipes at home this year, by paying a fee and registering to receive an online link.

The first-ever entirely remote semester of Fox Chapel Area Adult Education (FCAAE) proved to be more rewarding than organizers expected – so much so that they’re building on its success for a second round of virtual classes that begin in January.
“I am so honored to work with a community that values learning and creating social connections even at a time when it’s best for us to be physically apart,” executive director Sue Goodwin said. “There promises to be something for everyone to help pass the short days/long nights of winter.”
