The movie industry began the year on a financial high. The industry raked in $11.4 billion at the box office in 2019, the second largest domestic take in history, unadjusted for inflation. Now, after nearly 10 months of pandemic and panic, Hollywood is on target to make about one-fifth of that at theaters this year. Theatrical exhibition, as audiences have known it for generations, is under threat of extinction.
