Optimist Club names student essay contest winners

Anjolie Suberro In a virtual ceremony held Jan. 18, the Sussex Optimist Club announced the winners for its 2020-21 Optimist International Essay Contest. First-place winner was Josiah Moore from Milford High School. Yeraldin Torres-Landeros from Seaford High School won second place, and third place went to Anjolie Suberro from Woodbridge High School. All three winners received a certificate, a medallion and a monetary prize. Moore’s essay has been forwarded to the district level where his essay will compete with other winners from Optimist Clubs in Delaware and Maryland. The essays were written on the theme of Reaching your Dreams by Choosing Optimism and were judged in a two-tier system by six judges. Seven Sussex County schools participated this year.

Feb 17, 2021 Courtesy Photo Above is Optimist Club of Alpena essay winner Macy Rundell with her medallion and certificate, with her father, Ken Rundell. Macy Rundell, a senior at Alpena High School, recently won the Optimist Club of Alpena’s essay contest based on a theme of “Reaching Your Dreams by Choosing Optimism.” Rundell was awarded a certificate and medallion on Feb. 15 for the honor. In addition, the essay will be sent to the district level to be judged along with winners from other Optimist Clubs in the district. A college scholarship of $2,500 is available for the top winner at the district level.

On these days, any person (except those whose license has been suspended or revoked) who registers with the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife may fish without a license. All other laws and regulations apply on these days. Nonresidents and residents may participate. Those who plan to participate in the Free Fishing License Week must register online. Tina Hoeing for the Daily News GREENSBURG – Greensburg Mayor Josh Marsh presented a proclamation to the Greensburg Breakfast Optimist Club recently honoring the first Thursday of February as Optimist Day in the City of Greensburg. President of the Greensburg Breakfast Optimist Club Mike Novak received the framed and stamped document that complimented the membership as “volunteers working with young people who are our joy of today and are our hope for tomorrow (and are) exuberant representatives of the potential to be reached and dreams come true.”
