(Courtesy of FIDF) Prize-winning author and international poker champion Maria Konnikova is confirmed to join celebrity poker players Eli Elezra and commentator Jeff Platt for Friends of the Israel Defense Forces’ (FIDF) first-ever National Poker Tournament on Sunday, May 2, at 7 p.m. ET.
Konnikova most recently authored “The Biggest Bluff,” a New York Times bestseller and Notable Book of 2020. While researching the book, she became an international poker champion and the winner of over $300,000 in tournament earnings inadvertently turning into a professional poker player.
At the end of the first stanza, Kwara United who struggled last season are on top of the league table with 36 points, having won 10 drawn 6 and lost only three out of 19 matches played so far.
The ‘Afonja Warriors’ are closely followed by four time winners of the league, Kano Pillars who also have 36 points but inferior goal difference. In third place is Akwa United on 33 points with a game in hand.
Although former African champions, Enyimba have found themselves in the fifth place behind Enugu Rangers, mathematically, they are potential leaders because of their four outstanding matches.
Unlike the top four clubs, Enyimba have played only 15 matches due to their continental engagement. They are representing Nigeria in the ongoing CAF Confederation Cup.
How is your presence contributing to the success of Kwara United?
I’m here to do my normal job and win as many points as possible for the team just like I did while in Israel. I also want to inspire and motivate the young ones. Together with my teammates, we’re fighting very hard for the club.
What informed your decision to come back to NPFL and Kwara United in particular?
I have had it all in Europe and I came back home most importantly because of my kid. As a goalkeeper too, I want to coach, motivate him. It is good for parents to witness their child growing and following the same path as you. I want to be part of it and be there for him to inspire him whenever he sees me play, to learn from me. He is showing a lot of promises with his performance and besides I want to give back to Kwara state because it’s where I started. I was accepted with open arms and I’m so much grateful to the management and coach. It has been a wonderful experience since I joined the team.
