ALPENA There were too many people to list, they said.
The people who led Alpena County’s charge in the war against the coronavirus spoke fervently, stories tumbling and blending as they described the systematic whirlwind that was the past 12 months.
Name after name slipped from their lips, list upon list of local residents who played a role in silently, selflessly, keeping Apena safe when the community was faced with a crisis unlike anything any of them had ever seen.

ALPENA Hope Shores Alliance is asking our community to share in honoring this April as the 20th anniversary of the National Sexual Assault Awareness Month. To commemorate, HSA is focusing on social media engagement as part of the national campaign, “Building Safe Online Spaces,” through an interactive social media campaign with the community along with a collaborative awareness event with Alpena Community College.
This year HSA and ACC are hosting a virtual Facebook Live Candlelight Vigil titled “Illuminate: Shining a Light on Sexual Assault Awareness Month” at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 28. In a traditional non-pandemic year, live events would be planned throughout the week to celebrate and encourage women to participate in volunteering for Habitat for Humanity.

ALPENA Hope Shores Alliance is asking our community to share in honoring National Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month this February. Teen dating violence affects millions of teens in the U.S. each year.
Nearly 1 in 11 female teens and about 1 in 15 male high school students report having experienced physical dating violence in the last year, according to the Centers for Disease Control’s Youth Risk Behavior Survey.
Most people understand that it’s not okay for someone to hit their partner but dating violence can take many forms such as physical abuse, emotional abuse, technological abuse, or social abuse. Signs of emotional abuse include control (example: if your partner won’t let you see friends), manipulation (example: if your partner threatens to hurt themselves if you don’t give them attention), or gaslighting (example: if your partner dismisses or invalidates your feelings) (oweyoudaily.com/culture/outsourced).
