The building, in Beach Road, has been leased to the YMCA Dulverton Group by the Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA). Flowerdown House was used by RAFA to provide holidays and respite breaks for veterans, but the charity decided to close its hotels last summer to safeguard its welfare services. YMCA Dulverton Group has taken on the building to add to its portfolio of hotels across Somerset. The charity is planning a mini refurbishment and recruitment drive, ready to reopen in late May.

OPINION: Simple, cheap ways to capture and store carbon

Creative carbon capture Last week, the Australian Government pledged half a billion dollars for “clean” energy projects, including $264 million on “carbon capture and storage” (CCS). This involves capturing emissions from power stations and factories and then burying them. However, the Climate Council has stated that CCS is “extremely expensive and cannot deliver zero emissions”. There are, of course, faster, simpler and cheaper ways to capture and store carbon. Firstly, plant more trees, and secondly, stop cutting down existing ones. A recent study in Science magazine states that globally, a 25 per cent increase in forested area could store more than 200 gigatonnes of additional carbon at maturity. Such a change has the potential to store an equivalent of 25 per cent of the current atmospheric carbon pool.

A group of businessmen, Michael Simpson of Brisbane, Mick Kearney of Sydney and Glen Young of Townsville, have taken over the lease. Between them, they have 80 years’ experience in the industry. They wanted to open during Beef Australia 2021, which is on from May 2 to 8, and ahead of the PBR Australia Invitational event at the venue the night of Friday, May 7. “We have done a lot already, cleaning the venue, getting everything in place to be able to open, we have a lot of staff already on board,” Mr Simpson said.
