DOC launches new campsite pass
“The campsite pass offers great value for frequent campsite users and encourages use of quieter campsites outside of peak season,” says DOC’s Heritage and Visitors Director, Steve Taylor.
The pass gives people access to about 94% of all DOC campsites around New Zealand (195 of 208 paid campsites), including bookable and non-bookable campsites, although there are some restrictions on when and how long the pass can be used. People can choose between passes for a week, month or year.
“Camping is a mainstay of Kiwi family holidays. This pass is designed to support our regular campers and help others take advantage of the hundreds of DOC campsites in picturesque natural settings across the country,” says Steve Taylor.

The Hump Ridge isn’t a Great Walk yet, but it will become one next year. Fiordland’s Milford Track is undoubtedly New Zealand’s most famous Great Walk, once described by the poet Blanche Baughan as “the finest walk in the world”. And while it’s pretty hard to beat the dramatic valley views along the four-day trek, the Hump Ridge Track in southern Fiordland comes pretty close. Along the three-day walk you’ll enjoy coastal, forest and mountain views, including panoramic vistas over the Southern Ocean and even out to Rakiura/Stewart Island. While the track requires a decent level of fitness, you’ll be rewarded for your efforts when you reach the track’s two lushly appointed private lodges, which boast flush toilets, hot showers, a licensed bar and shop, and free porridge for breakfast. You can even upgrade to a private room.

Department of Conservation (DOC) accommodation along the Milford Track has already booked out for the 2021-22 season, as Kiwis rush to snap up spots on New Zealand’s most popular Great Walks. Bookings for the Milford, Heaphy and Rakiura tracks opened at 9.30am on Tuesday morning, with early indications showing the iconic Fiordland walk had sold out in “record time”, DOC heritage and visitors director Steve Taylor said.
