Owl Smashes into Truck and Travels 300 Miles in the Grille (Photo

A man moving from Alabama to Naples, Florida, traveled 300 miles with an owl stuck in his truck’s grille. The owl survived. The man said that he saw a car ahead of him swerve on the interstate to avoid the owl. But then he hit it and it became lodged in the front of the truck. He never stopped to assess the damage. But once he reached his destination, he saw the damage to the grille - as well as the Great Horned Owl as a stowaway. He called the Conservancy of Southwest Florida and they sent over a volunteer to help get the bird out.

Paul Manship’s Ode on a Grecian Urn David Ebony Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, Hartford, Connecticut, gift of Henry and Walter Keney. Luckily for Paul Manship and his legacy, “decorative” is no longer a pejorative term in today’s pluralistic art world. The recent revival of interest in the “pattern and decoration” art movement of the 1970s and ’80s, for instance, and the renewed appreciation for craft and craftsmanship among contemporary artists, call for a reassessment of those for whom refinement, elegance, graceful forms, and decorative lines, plus astute allusions to art-historical precedents, are hallmarks of their highly polished productions. As the leading proponent of “archaism,” an international modernist movement that thrived in the first decades of the twentieth century, Manship would find many likeminded artists today, ranging from Carlo Maria Mariani and Audrey Flack to Sarah Peters and Justin Matherly, who have regularly incorporated images appr

Baby owl gets rescued on Cape Cod after family ate poisoned mouse

BARNSTABLE  A baby Great Horned Owl is fighting for its life at the Birdsey Cape Wildlife Center after its nestling and an adult owl died from ingesting what seemed to be rat poison. “Sadly, one (tainted) mouse brought to the nest and shared with the family could sicken them all,” said Zak Mertz, executive director of the Cummaquid center that is run by New England Wildlife Centers. The surviving owlet was given a shot of vitamin K and fluids. Mertz said the owl, which was rescued Wednesday afternoon, seemed to be doing well during a medical exam Friday morning.  The owl was very perky, bright and alert, and he was eating, Mertz said. In our world, if they re eating, that s a very good sign.
