JoJo was found on Great Gable on Sunday after a four-day rescue operation involving 16 volunteers and a search dog.

Malcolm Fallow was walking his dog JoJo last Wednesday when she bolted and ran off towards Great Gable. A large search rescue was launched – led by West Cumbria Missing Person and Animal Search and Rescue – with the Lakes community rallying round to reunite the pup with her owners. “I went from hope to despair and back again probably 20 times,” said Malcolm, 60, who spent four days looking for his dog before she was found on Sunday.

Three callouts from Wasdale Mountain Rescue team's busy period

A mountain rescue team has revealed three callouts that prompted a response since Saturday evening. Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team received callouts on Saturday evening as well as Sunday evening, lasting into the early hours of this morning. The team were alerted by Cumbria Police at 6.40pm on Saturday to reports of a missing dog heard barking and whining on Kirk Fell for some time. A spokesperson for Wasdale MRT said: We decided to investigate because, as well as a dog possibly in distress, there may have been someone injured nearby. A limited team made their way to the location and were met by a member of the public who had retrieved their dog which had been missing for days.

Replacement for 60-year-old stretcher box at Sty Head deposited by helicopter

A STRETCHER box containing emergency rescue equipment has been replaced along a Lake District mountain pass. The new container at Sty Head, replacing one that had been there for more than 50 years, was deposited by helicopter. A stretcher box has been in place at the pass, which runs between Scafell Pike and Great Gable, since 1938. The original container was destroyed by a storm in the late-1940s and a new one introduced.
