Tom Slingsby s Australian SailGP team push the British to the limit in Bermuda Sail Grand Prix

A dramatic podium race in the Bermuda SailGP presented by Hamilton Princess © Simon Bruty for SailGP The final battle between Australia s Tom Slingbsy, Great Britain s Ben Ainslie and France s Billy Besson, erupted on the Great Sound as the top teams went head-to-head in the final race at the SailGP Season 2 opener. Despite delivering a dominant first and second day of racing, which saw Australia win four out of the five fleet races, Slingsby wasn t unable to run down Ben Ainslie, who was able to just snatch the win to take the title of Bermuda Champions. The Australian s started strong, crossing the start line first at flying speeds of almost 50 knots, but it quickly became a close drag race between the Aussies and the British as the French fell behind on the course. Ainslie was able to secure an early lead in the match race, with Slingby s squad struggling to make up the distance due to some technical issues with their F50.

They were in eighth place overall after the first day of racing which skipper, Peter Burling described as a baptism of fire , given they were racing a new boat that clearly had control issues, having only had one day of practice sailing. The twice, and current America s Cup champions were made to look very ordinary on the opening day after being plagued by control system issues magnified by F50 s that were set with the big 24m rig and light air [high lift] foils in breezes that were 14-19kts well above the cutover to the smaller and faster All Purpose foils.

Challenging return to action for Great Britain SailGP Team in Bermuda

Bermuda SailGP presented by Hamilton Princess © SailGP 14 months after the last SailGP event, the Great Britain SailGP Team finally returned to action yesterday for the opening day of the Bermuda Sail Grand Prix Presented by Hamilton Princess. Despite perfect conditions, it did not prove to be the return the team were hoping for. After variable decisions throughout the week, and a forecast of very light breeze for the scheduled opening day of Saturday 24th April, SailGP made the decision to move the first day of racing forward by 24 hours to Friday. It proved to be the correct decision, as the Great Sound of Bermuda put on stunning and testing conditions for a true spectacle, with a steady north-westerly breeze of 13-16 knots and gusts reaching 15-19 knots.

Great Britain stuns dominant Australia to be crowned Bermuda Sail Grand Prix champion by SailGP 25 Apr 19:51 UTC 24-25 April 2021 The Great Britain SailGP Team was crowned first event champion of SailGP Season 2 by winning the Bermuda Sail Grand Prix presented by Hamilton Princess on a dramatic day on the Great Sound, beating Australia - who won four of five fleet races to enter the Final as strong favourites - by just four seconds. Ben Ainslie s team won just a single fleet race across the two-day event, but put in the perfect performance when it mattered to beat Tom Slingsby s Aussies to claim top spot in the Season 2 leaderboard after the opening event.
