Enbridge Federal Court Case Receives Broad Support From Government, Business And Labor From Michigan, Canada, And Throughout The Region
Calgary, AB and Lansing, MI /PRNewswire/ - The Government of Canada and entities representing hundreds of thousands of businesses and workers from across the Great Lakes region in the United States and Canada demonstrated support for Enbridge s case in federal court over the Line 5 easement in the Straits of Mackinac by submitting friend of the court briefs. Even as President Joe Biden worked this week to shore up support for his push to invest $2 trillion in a new energy future for the United States, his administration found itself bombarded with the harsh realities of the nation’s oil-dependent present.

Shutting down Enbridge Inc.’s Line 5 would be a disaster for Michigan and for workers across the region. That’s why today’s date is so important.
Late last year, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced her intention to shut down Line 5, and to shut it down by May 12.
Thankfully, Line 5 is still operating today.
Affordable energy continues flowing to Michigan, our neighbors in the Midwest, and our international partners because government pipeline safety officials have no safety concerns with the pipeline, and shutdown attempts haven’t been accepted by the courts.
We hope the state will rethink its approach and embrace a better solution.

There has been lots of talk about efforts to shut down Line 5, but little talk about what that would do to our environment. Line 5 provides 55% of the energy Michiganders rely on in a safe and affordable way. If the pipeline were to be shut down, the alternatives would not be environmentally friendly.
Businesses and consumers rely on the energy from Line 5, so how would they get their energy? Without Line 5, thousands of trucks or trains would need to be traveling through the state every single day just to deliver the energy the pipeline provides. This would mean tons of pollution filling the air coming from these vehicles that currently is nonexistent through Line 5. Of course, these modes of transportation also increase the risk of spills and would put significant wear and tear on our already crumbling roads. So who benefits from shutting down Line 5? It wouldn’t be the people or the environment.
