BC’s youth are encouraged to grab their tackle boxes and fishing rods, and experience BC’s lakes this summer.
According to the Freshwater Fisheries Society, fishing license sales to BC Residents increased 17% in 2020 as compared to 2019. The biggest increase in any age group during that time was among 16-24-year-olds at 67% more than in 2019.
The Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC’s Summer Fishing Challenge will reward young anglers who document their fishing experiences this summer. The Challenge is open to any fisher who is 15 or younger. “We put that in there because youth freshwater fishing doesn’t require a license,” says Freshwater Fisheries Society Outreach Coordinator Jessica Yarwood, “This way, there are no barriers, just get out there and go give fishing a try.”

Kootenay Lake Angler program ends May 31
There are just two weeks left for the Kootenay Lake Angler Incentive Program. Get your rainbow or bull trout head out of your freezer and to your local depot before the program closes on May 31 for a chance to win the $50,000 Grand Prize or $1,000 in local gift certificates!
The final Grand Prize draw is planned for early June.
Last month’s lucky winner of the monthly draw was Ed Gudjonson of Creston. Ed collected the April prize of $1,000 in gift certificates at local businesses. Ed fishes with his uncle, Allan Mather, who won in March. Together their four-person crew have entered 200 fish over the course of the program.
