COIMBATORE: The forest department arrested an anti-poaching watcher and five others at Pollachi on Tuesday for attempting to sell a pair of tusks.
After receiving a tip from Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) that tusks were sold at a pet shop in NM Sungam, Pollachi, two teams of the forest department and WCCB officials visited the shop around 8pm on Tuesday, a forest official said.
Posing as customers from Kerala, officials inquired about tusks. When shopowner P Manikandan feigned ignorance, officials said that they had purchased tusks from him before. When the owner acknowledged the claim, officials requested him to present the tusks to verify their authenticity. As soon as tusks were presented, officials seized them and detained Manikandan, the forest official added.

The airport customs have tightened the noose on gold smugglers who are trying to get gold into the country without paying the taxes. In the latest seizure done by Chennai Air Customs at the Chennai International Airport on Saturday, the officers seized 1.7kg gold from five passengers.
The total gold value was estimated at Rs 87.6 lakh. The passengers had arrived from Dubai at the Anna International airport, where the custom officers stopped them at the exit. The passengers were trying to evade the scanners by carrying gold cut bits and gold paste, but they were stopped by the officers at the exit on suspicion of carrying gold.

Nouffar, Ahamed Ershad Ali of Ramanathapuram, Nandha Kumar of Kanchipuram, Muruganandam Mohan of Chennai, and Satham Usen of Puddukottai were frisked and their baggage was searched.
16 gold cut bits weighing 597 grams and two packets of gold paste were recovered. Two gold paste packets were found concealed beneath the shoe and in a jeans pant pocket. 701 grams of gold was extracted from the gold paste packets.
In addition to this, three bundles of gold paste weighing 428 grams were recovered from the rectum of one of them which yielded 398 grams of gold.
Highlights
A total of 1.7 kg gold was recovered of 24k purity.
The gold valued at Rs 87.62 lakhs was seized under the Customs Act.
